Fall and winter are the perfect time to get your children involved in the arts. As the temperatures drop and gray days become more common, children of all ages can benefit from the light the creative arts bring into our lives. From music to dance to painting and clay work, research shows that children who are involved n the arts show improvement in several different areas including:

  • Critical thinking skills
  • Stress management
  • Language and literacy skills
  • Social and emotional development

Create an Art Space at Home

Making a space where your children can get in touch with their artistic side at home is a great way to keep them occupied and productive when it’s too wet to head outside. Some simple art supplies that are a must in every household include:

  • Crayons, colored pencils or markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Paper

With minimal money spent, you now have the basics for many art projects. Now add to your art supplies without touching your pocket book and while helping mother earth by gathering recyclable for your child’s creative stash. Examples of simple items that your children can engage with in different ways are:

  • Buttons
  • Paper towel tubes
  • Egg cartons
  • Rubber bands
  • Cloth from old clothes
  • Cans, bottles, and jars

Once you have gathered these simple supplies make a special space for them in your pantry, cupboard, or anywhere your children have easy access to. Designate a specific table or desk area to art. This can be the kitchen table (during non-eating hours), or you can purchase a special table just for art.

Other ways to integrate the arts into your children’s daily life include keeping instruments on hand for them to have fun with. Hand drums and maracas are fairly affordable or can be made from recyclable materials around the house. Check out www.familycorner.com for some great instrument craft ideas. After your kids get home from school each day, turn on some tunes and let them play instruments, dance and sing to the music. This will get out the wiggles, rid their bodies of daily stress, and allow for some family bonding fun.
