Born in the Caul

This viral video, uploaded by Jasmine Perez, shows her baby being born in the most unique way, and has given people around the world the very rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of what a baby’s life in utero is like. This little one was born still encased in the amniotic sac. This birth experience is extremely rare, in fact fewer than one in every 80,000 births result in a baby being born still covered in the amniotic sac, a phenomenon also known as an “en caul birth.”

During a typical birth, the amniotic sac breaks prior to giving birth. There is usually a “rush of fluid” released from the mother’s body and the infant is born soon after. In the case of an en caul birth, the sac does not break and the infant is born inside of an entire, unbroken, amniotic sac. These births are uniquely beautiful and in this video viewers get to witness the baby’s very first breath.

Throughout history mythology has surrounded this type of birth. Medieval Europeans considered caul births to be a sign of greatness and meant a lifetime of good luck for the child. Still today, in many countries including Russia, caul births are highly regarded and thought of as a sign of good things to come.

It’s interesting to note that the following people were born in the caul:

  • Lord Byron
  • Sigmund Freud
  • Napoleon
  • Charlemagne
